As much of the recent discussion in the technical/mechanical realm is beyond my practical grasp, just wanted to change direction & mention a fairly new CD release on the Document label, "Harp Blowers, 1925-1936".
It includes the entire recorded output of: -John Henry Howard (1925) -(at long last!) De Ford Bailey (1927-28) -D. H. "Bert" Bilbro (1928-31) -George Clarke (1936)
Most tracks are instrumentals, but there a few w/ vocals. No special electronically-augmented effects here, although 1 Bilbro cut sounds like he was using some sort of amplification. Fascinating are the great rhythmic techniques, especially Bailey, as seems to be the case w/ the very early styles.
As is commonly known, De Ford Bailey was a much-maligned figure in musical history. Those interested should check out David C. Morton's fine book, "De Ford Bailey:A Black Star in Early Country Music".
One source for this CD is Roots & Rhythm in El Cerrito, CA. Fun listening for people curious about harmonica pioneers, obscure as some of these players may be.
