Subject: Re: ASCAP licensing hassle

Around here the clubs pay ASCAP and BMI, the two big publishing
companies of music. Both want an annual flat fee which they distribute
(supposedly) their authors and to their administrators. ASCAP has the
worse reputation between the two among the folks I've talked to, but they
both threaten clubs that don't pay. So here they pay. And the flat fee
is supposed make it so that they don't have to stick somebody in the club
and make lists of songs and how often they are played, and come up with
an itemized bill. Given the ease with which music can be piped in
apparently with a licencing agreement, club owners need to have a real
commitment to live music. Some do, some don't. It's either that or do
sets that are only public domain music.
