I say take the time. Make the time. If you're going to blow a couple hundred dollars on an amp, you should get one you will still like in 6 weeks.
As far as new amps, the only one I've heard that I like is the reissue '59 bassman.
BTW: It doesn't have to be an exhaustive search to find a good vintage or custom tube amp. Nearly every city of any size has at least one guitar shop that carries some older amps and an even grand in your pocket should give you the pick of nearly anything except a tweed bassman.
There's also no reason to stick to Fender and Gibson. Some of the National/Valco stencil amps are great and can be had for a c-note, maybe 2. But all amps play and sound a little different, and will work differently with your particular style and mic. There's simply no substitute for playing a dozen or so and getting the one that sounds best with your eyes closed.
