I had the pleasure of attending the above named event yesterday (Sunday). It was subtitled "Battle Of The Harmonicas III." The event took place at the Sports Zone in Levittown, PA to an audience of about 400 blues enthusiasts.
The first band to play was Ron Krammer and the Hurricanes. Let's just say that their set was forgettable.
The second group was Doug Jay and the Blue Jays. I had never seen them before, but apparently they're well known in the Philadelphia area, and for good reason. Doug Jay is a fine harp player and the band tore the place up. They have a CD out, which I was unable to purchase, but it is available from Kevin's Harps. Doug wrote a number of the tunes on the CD, many of which they played yesterday, and is a fine songwriter, as well. My only quibble with him is the amplification of his harp. He needs to learn where the bass knob is, IMO. The best number he did all day, sound-wise, was when he played through the vocal mike on a Jimmy Reed tune. Otherwise, when playing through the harp mike, the sound was way too trebly. Mind you, I love screaming treble, but this was to the point where it didn't sound much like a harp any more. Distinctive, yes. Pleasant, no. That notwithstanding, if you hear they're playing in your area, go see them. This guy can play.
The show was capped off with a 90 minute set by Little Sammy Davis. Sammy is a fine harp player, but his singing is what sets him apart. He has a new CD on Delmark Records called "I Ain't Lyin'." The title cut and another called "Daniel" were highlights of the set, along with an excellent version of the old Junior Walker tune "Shotgun." Sammy put on a great show and had the crowd dancing throughout. Another must-see.
