Subject: ADMINISTRIVIA - close it again?

OK, here we go again.

Anyone who has been on the list for 6 months or more will remember the
last round of discussion about "closed" lists, when the first magazine
subscription spams (the samantha spam) started hitting us. At that
point, I suggested that I set the list to be "restricted post", such that
ONLY subscribed members could post to the list.

Much to my suprise, this generated a very heated debate, and I took a lot
of flak over it. I went ahead and did the restricted post thing anyway,
and it worked great - no more spams, no more subscribe messages going to
the whole list (they get bounced to owner-harp-l), etc. However, I
continued to take shit for it, in offline mail, and got called a number of
names including "fascist" and "power crazed". So I lost my cool one day
and simply opened the list back up to "unrestricted posting".

Now that the spammers have found us again, once more I'd like to ask for
the list's permission to set it to "restricted post". If I don't receive
any threatening mail in response to this message, I will assume that I can
go ahead and do it.

The only drawback will be that folk whos "From" address differs in any
significant way to their subscribed address will have their postings
bounced. I have to fix each of these cases by hand, and it can take a few
weeks to iron out all the kinks.

The "reply to" setting (reply to sender v. reply to list) is a whole other
can of worms which I don't want to get into right now. I have my reasons
for setting it the way it is, and that's the way it's gonna stay for at
least the short term future. Call me a power crazed fascist ...
