Subject: Re: Autoscore & Art & Emotion & Breakthroughs & Musical Goals
(Longish)

That Autoscore program is really cool! I've only messed with it enough to see
that it can listen to what note I play on harmonica, tell me what it is (ala
some chromatic tuners) and put it in music notation! One note at a time only.
No special hardware other than a sound card (for mic input). Next step is to
get one of the software types on the list to write as program to put it in tab...

To repeat myself (I know y'all don't read all this stuff, or remember it, so I
have to repeat myself b%^~--):

"Art is skillfully crafted, synergistic communication of emotion."
(c) Michael B Will

Sounds like what Douglas Tate et al are talking about--making art.

Music is a dynamic art--fleeting, short lived:
- - Communication of emotion. Check.
- - Synergistic communication--requiring artist and audience; the whole
greater than the sum of its parts. Check.
- - Skillfully crafted. Check.

Art. Check.

Can an elephant-painting be art? Not by my definition. A sunset or flower?
Nope. A lonely harpist strumming metal reeds in a forest where trees are
falling with no one else to hear? If s/he listens to h/is own playing and
learns something new--gains insight or realization. Yep. Would that be
often?
I doubt it.. Does someone else listen, even while you're alone? Someone who

can hear your spirit? Someone for whom time has no meaning? Who can
transcend the mundane?

Did you forget?

Uh oh, Late Night Mad Mic'l must put this in.

Dark webs untangle from my spine,
Unraveling like shielded cord,
Revealing thus the inner shine,
Like glinting from a steely sword,
My skull upon its tip.
I slash a devilish beast away,
Though one approaches in its stead,
The Siren's songs these demons play
A haunting dissonance I dread...
But slowly comes my grip.

And soon the iron hand I hold
Will serve to rule my life once more
By drawing forth a heart less cold
To show me strength o'erlooked before
That I might start anew.
By wielding Spirit's loving flame
I'll keep the maddening beasts at bay,
And drawing on its power claim
The wisdom of a better Way
For all that I must do.

A definition should let in what belongs in, and filter out what shouldn't
pass. What think ye of mine of art?

BREAKTHROUGHS? I'll filter in inspirations and let in Harp-L..major.
Jamming in the car. If only I'd started 15 years of 2 hour a day commutes ago..
Recently, jamming with David Barrett's tape for "Building Harmonica
Technique"--so *that's* what it is *supposed* to sound like! Ah ha! Unlike
most, I discovered "The Blues" after starting to play harmonica, while looking
for music suitable for a 10-hole short harp. No one recommended country--but
I still like some of the great harp on a lot of modern country music!

Musical goals? To produce art.

Midnight Mad,
