Subject: Re: Against The Grain

Since Bobbie brought up Tommy Morgan, I'm going to do a little raving of my
own.

I saw "The Truth About Cats and Dogs" last week, and of course was delighted
to discover that harmonica was featured prominently on the soundtrack. When
the closing credits rolled, the harmonica player was blowing some VERY sweet
stuff over the changes to "For Once In My Life." And to my surprise, that
player was Tommy Morgan.

I shouldn't have been surprised, of course; the most unsurprising thing about
Morgan is how often he surprises you with a stylistically perfect performance
in a genre you've never heard him do before. I've spoken to him once, about
16 years ago, and two things stick out in my mind: 1) how helpful he was to
me, a young player he'd never met, and 2) how he kept blowing my mind by
referring to music he'd played that I never knew was his, in an extraordinary
range of styles.

Morgan is a great player (from the recent evidence) at the top of his game.
I plan to see him play the next time he passes this way. Have fun at the
show, Bobbie.
