As much as I hate to leap into a quagmire of technical postings with my feet clad only in the Jandals that are my knowledge in this area I do have some observations to add.
When I U-block, a technique I have been practising lately, I feel the covers vibrate. This happens far more than when I pucker. I play LOs exclusively. Anyway the tone when I U-Block is amazing to me and certainly better than my pucker tone. I assume that the vibration of the coverplates is a factor of the tone improvement. With this in mind surely the nature of the shape and the material used in the coverplates affects the way they vibrate in response to the reeds vibration at the time. Another assumption I will make, (thats two ;-) ) is that the nature of the vibration of the cover plates may affect the nature of the vibration of the reeds, since both these components are attached to effectively the same, relatively solid object, the comb/reedplate unit. Any "flapping" of the covers would also affect the shape and size of the chamber between the reed plates and the cover plates however minutely. If this is the case the material used in the cover plates ie:- the thickness, the material, and the shape of the coverplates will all have some affect on the nature of this vibration. The harps ability to transmit these vibrations to the reed would also affect how much these factors alter the tone.
How many variables is that......
What do you think "Wader-wearers." :-)
Yours in over my waist and sloshing around happily in my jandals,
