Subject: Augusta Heritage Workshops

This summer the Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College in
Elkins, West Virginia, will be offering three weeks of harmonica
instruction.

July 14 - 19, 1996, the "Blues Week" harmonica courses will be taught by
Gary Primich and Phil Wiggins (of Cephas & Wiggins) with a beginners class
taught by Paul Watson.

July 28 - August 2, 1996, the Advanced Harmonica Class will be taught by
Peter Madcat Ruth.

August 4 - 11, 1996, the "Old Time Week" harmonica class will be taught by
David Rice from Cleveland, Ohio, with an "old time" focus usually
associated with the fiddle and banjo.

One of the best ways to improve your harmonica playing is to immerse
yourself in harmonica playing for a whole week. Augusta is a great place
to do that...

The Augusta Heritage Workshops are held on the campus of Davis & Elkins
College in Elkins, West Virginia. It's like a music, dance, and folk arts
camp for adults. Students live in the dorms, eat in the cafeteria, and
immerse themselves in whatever they're studying. Besides harmonica, all
sorts of music, folk arts, and folk dancing classes are offered. Evenings
are filled with concert performances by the staff, parties, films, dances,
and nightly jam sessions.

Madcat's Advanced Harmonica Class will give advanced harmonica students an
in-depth look at the fine points of playing the diatonic 10-hole harmonica,
and an opportunity to learn from Madcat's 30 years of harmonica playing
experience. Sonny Terry's rhythms, Little Walter's phrasing, Sonnyboy
Williamson's timing, Big Walter Horton's tone, and Charlie McCoy's speed
will all be examined. Playing in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 1st flat
(12th) positions will be explored. Students will need harmonicas in
several keys.
