Thanks to all who responed to "which way is up"! Being thus emboldened I now risk the Ire of all and venture two more puzzles with a comment. First the comment: I fully agree with anyone who says that the more you know the better you blow. For myself, however, I'm 50 and new to music - I only have so much time - I'm trying to learn all I can but\ my main effort is practice and playing. Formal training is just not in the picture. That being so I hope I can lean on some of what I'm pleased to call my new harp-l friends who are obviosly musically knowledgeable for a couple of tips. Come to my aid Theory Meisters. First - after reading a recent string on the subject I have started to practice blocking along with my pucker and am pleased to report that I seem to be able to pick a note and bend with the block. What I'm looking for though is the "octave" mentioned here so often. Is it playing the identical note an octave apart as I have guessed? Or is it something altogether different? Is it used for rythm as I have guessed - or for something different? Any recorded examples that might be familiar? Second, I would like to play chords behind the guitar as was mentioned here previously. Does the harp play the same progression as the guitar? If so, will the holes always be the same in any key playing second postition (assuming a simple blues progression to begin with)? If so (and here's the biggest confession of ignorance) what is the hole progression? (Begin with 123 draw?) All advice deeply appreciated, and seriously tried.
