Too many fish in this world already. Actually while I can agree with much of the recent discussion regarding amplification/gizmos there is more than a grain of truth in the statement that amplified harmonica and acoustic harmonica are two entirely different instruments. Certainly a poor acoustic player will be a poor amplified player but many excellent acoustic players suffer when the hit the steep learning curve that amplification requires. Just as knowing which end of the harmonica to hold upwards can be important knowing how to eliminate feedback and still be heard in a loud blues band is also an essential skill. There are many who think wrongly that the way to good tone is some special combination of equipment. Not true but, in my opinion what seperates the truly great players from the merely good is the sum total of a lot of subtlety and nuance. Details matter. Howard Levy has a rackmount preference the same as Big Walter Horton liked his Princeton. To suggest that techno talk is foppish folly is wrongheaded. Anything in extreme can diminish the whole. To disregard the tools of our trade in pursuit of some puritan ethic can only serve to limit our choices of expression.
Finally let me say that this post is in no way an attack of any individual viewpoint expressed on this list. If you think I'm referring to YOU you're wrong. Like others before me I'm adding my 2 cents to the discussion. Lets hope the discussion continues to evolve. fjm
