Subject: Re: Star Performer Comments

I play Star Performers almost exclusively. In my experience they keep their
tune well - some of them are in their third year of use. At a rough estimate
I think I've had about 2 out of 40 which eventually got an untunable reed.
The Star Performer has its own characteristics. You can get a wide range of
tones but to my ears the tone is always on the bright side, but not so
bright as to be tinny - I like it.
One of their big advantages is that they are cheaper than most, especially
if you buy a twelve pack. Their quality is decent but could be better.
Out of the box, you might find that the offsets need adjusting. The reeds
are relatively thin and I find it hard to get an acceptable overblow out
of them. Their construction puts your mouth in contact with the brass
reed plates which some people don't like. The lower harps respond well to
throat vibrato on both blow and draw giving a rich sound that I am quite
partial to. Most harps lose some of their tonal qualities over time and
the Star Performers are no exception. I always keep some new harps in
the most frequently played keys because comparison is the best way to
assess if the discrepancy is a problem.
