On volume pots: If you're just starting out and will be sitting in with folks a lot I highly recommend having a volume control to control feedback. Once you have your own rig and learn how to control it I'd say a volume pot is optional. I prefer having one on my mic since I use a wireless rig. BTW, I use an Astatic mic.
Star Performers: Thanks for the plug Mic'l. Yep, I like the tone but the Lee Oscars last WAY longer (>3x longer so if you're playing a lot they're worth the money if you like the tone). I have LO's as backup harps and use them for practicing. I also like Special 20's, but the quality was so bad a couple of years ago I'm waiting for folks to say "They're as high quality as LO's" before I buy any more. For beginners I think Huang harps are an excellent way to get all 12 keys and avoid the "I don't have the right key" frustration.
