I agree with all you say....don't cry, I would hate to see Hugh go rusty,
BUT, whereas I agree I think it is a narrow but common outlook. (This is not getting at you Jon it is a general statement about an oft repeated view) I feel that the world of harp playing is incredibly wide. Yes it has its nutters ... but it depends on who you are and where you are standing as to who the nutter is!!!
I want to see everyone catered for inthe Harp World. For some the idea of any formal education is the kiss of death. For others it is the life blood that drives them forward.
IMHO the argument is that an accreditatin scheme gives a pupil who is seeking this type of 'education' from a teacher some sort of assurance the the teacher is appropriate.
Whether any one person considers 'formal' or 'teaching' or whatever to be not for them , I see no reason why the idea should be sneered at for other people.
I am a dyed in the wool classical player of the harmonica, it is what I study and teach to the very best of my ability. But I actively encourage people to learn in other ways than mine. with different methods, even stopping them buying my products if I don't think them appropriate. I listen to and enjoy other music than classical and marvel at what is achieved by players on diatonic. I don't however go around saying that they should not learn the way they did or sneer at the method which has achieved results for them.
