As the King of the Amp junkies I will field this question.

Your 60's Ampeg amp is probably adequite to good, depending on its mechanical
state and probably more important the condition of the tubes.
So I would go for a decent mic.
Remember a good amp mic combination is the icing on the cake (1/8 inch
thick).
Your ability to play is the cake (three inches).
