Actually, it's much simpler and clearer to use the Circle of Fifths for
this exercise, as has been discussed here before. While G may be the IV in
the I-IV-V progression, it's actually the fifth key above D counting all
the keys in between, i.e. Eb=1, E=2, F=3, F#=4, G=5. To get to third
position, just count up five more, Ab=1, A=2, Bb=3, B=4, C=5, and so on
through 12th position. I find this much easier to remember and it's
consistent for all the positions.
