Last night I asked to sit in with a country band, "Hey, do you guys ever let harp players sit in?" "Yeah.. What key do you have?" asked the guitar player somewhat skeptically. "All of 'em in my car," I answered. "OoohhKaay..." suddently more interest. "We can do Mustang Sally. Key of C so you'll need a G harp." "I'll worry about which harp," I assured him.
And pulled my F harp to play crossed to the key of C...
Morals of the story? Having a case full of harps seems to inspire confidence (misplaced as it might be). Don't let the guitar player pick your harp for you.. It's easy to get momentarily confused in a new situation, like sitting in with a band for the first time.
Oh, and has been discussed before. A guy sees me with a harp case and wants to see it. During a song! Hmm. Okay..ignoring him doesn't work. I hand it over. He proceeds to ooh and aah, pull my harps out and handle them. Hopefully the drool was minimal. "Geez, I suck on those things, okay. Look but don't touch!" I didn't say (during a song..). Maybe we need a "code" name (uh oh, controversy) for this kind of guy too. John, or Rick or Hugh or something...
Just kidding! Please don't axe my account...
How 'bout Gus Jr?
