Subject: SPAH Convention

I just returned home from the SPAH Convention in St Louis. (That's the
Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica for new
folks.) I lurked there physically like I do here virtually and was amazed.
There was music everywhere! In the lobby, in the bathrooms, coming through
the walls of my room, in the vestibules at each exit. About 450 people
attended, from 19 to 90 years old in my estimation. Every style of music
imaginable was being played and all of it good. In my lurking, I didn't
meet many people, but recognized a lot of names from the list and from Kim
Field's book, Harmonicas, Harps & Heavy Breathers. It was fascinating to
put a face to some of you whose posts I've been reading here. Harmonica
Jon is a wildman!
I've only been playing for a short time, but didn't really feel
intimidated, I just listened--and listened--and listened.
Jon, the banquet on Saturday was pretty good, but the power went off just
before dinner!
I'd encourage everyone interested in any aspect of playing harmonica to
join SPAH (harpSP~ol.com) and attend next year's convention in Detroit.
The blues sessions each night (all night!) are well worth the price of
admission and the seminars are great gravy.
I played most of the way back home at 70 mph down the interstate and have a
lot of work to do for next year.
