Having learned most of my theory on the guitar/bass, I use 4ths (as the
guitar tuning is based on 4ths) to figure cross-harp positions most of the
time. However, i do use the circle of fifths to figure other positions, and
for chord construction.

I think that pianists may be more likely to use the circle of fifths.

Shouldn't that say "smith charts"!?! ;-p

In the original example, i believe the guitarist was erroneously figuring
DOWN a fourth. instead of down a fifth. He may have, in fact, downed a
fifth, hence the mistake!
