I glue little bits of 400 auto body paper to the ends of (flat) popsicle sticks. 4 pieces in all making 4 tools on one stick. It's very easy to work with and very economical.
It's true that Hohner reeds (and reed plates!) show deep and often fatal file scratches, even the "laser-tuned" Big Rivers. Lee Oskars, on the other hand have very neat chisle or scraper marks which don't touch the edges of the reed. Also, Lee Oskars are much much better in tune with themselves (and much closer to A=440).
Doug Tate advocates polishing reeds with "wet n dry" paper and I trust his experience on this. If I ever get a pretty good reedplate I will do it. Rick Epping (I think) reported that Hohner had tried polishing accordion reeds but found they failed sooner. Go figure.
400 grit takes a long time but you can be very accurate. This is important to me since I play mostly "classical" chromatic. My tunings last a long time since I only use bending for "popsy" stuff and never go over a half step (and that rarely). I use a mic if I need lots of volume.
