Subject: Odd Times/Funky Chords

I have recently been jamming with a couple of guitar players that play a lot
of odd time signatures (13/15 etc) and minor seveth, major seventh or just
plain unnamable dissonant chords. As almost all of my previous experience
was with blues, rock, and country... this has come as a kick in the ass for me.

Yes I can usually get past the time signatures, (except for this one blues
progression that drops a couple of notes every 4 bars), but I am having
a real hard time finding notes that sound good. I know that the answer is
to learn some proper scales instead of relying on major scale notes going with
major chords, but can anyone suggest any other techniques to help me
contribute to the music. I really hate just sitting there waiting for my
solo then coming up with the equivallent of chalkboard nail scratchings.

Just a poor harp player in a non-harp-player-friendly world.
