I have three sets of bass pedals. My oldest ones (which badly need
overhauling) are Kreager. They're mechanical, and pluck a reed, similar
to some old electric pianos. My other two sets are made by Elka, an
Italian company, and are MIDI. These require a MIDI keyboard or sound
module to operate. One unit is one octave. The other is 1-1/2 octaves,
and velocity sensitive (loudness according to how hard or soft you play
them). I really like the extra half octave, and velocity enables me to
play MUCH more dynamically. I typically use a modified "organ" sound with
a fairly slow release.
