Subject: Bluestime

I saw J. Geils and Magic Dick's band Bluestime this past weekend
at the Croton, N.Y. blues festival. The last time I paid any
attention to these guys was when I had their first album in my
college days. After that they got to rocky for me.

Anyhow, they played nothing but tasty old Sonnyboy, and Little Walter
style stuff. Great mix and balance. Two hollow body Gibsons with
warm overdriven sound, upright bass, and drums, backed up the harp
which was fat and cut thru loud and clear. I was completely surprised.
It was a great sound.

MD played harps with black plastic bodies (couldn'd tell what brand) thru
a bullet mic into a Fender Twin (red knobs). His tone was great.
A bit bright for my taste. I kept wondering if I was hearing the subtle
difference of a plastic vs. wood body harp, or if it was the amp.
He played plain old cross harp with no altered tunings that I could hear
and I loved it.

JG play an ES335 thru a blackface super and had a strong T-bone Walker
influence, very tasty solos.

The second guitar player also played a hollow body thru a Peavey Classic
and was clearly as good a JG but not featured as much. They played
some great unison stuff.

I went to the show with a friend who runs a vintage guitar/amp shop
in Manhatten. His comment was that for the style they are playing,
this is as good as it gets. I will add, however, that MD doesn't
have that voice of Rice Miller, but I enjoyed it.
