'twould be nice to know the chords.

Since I have to guess, I'll guess that if regular major/minor stuff
isn't working--and especially if it's jazzy sounding--that they're using
diminished chords. A diminished scale is alternating whole and half
steps--and ignoring inversions there are only 3 different diminished
scales.

(Db Eb E F# G A Bb C )
(D E F G Ab Bb Cb Db )

Checking out my harp layout tables (http://wj.net/mic-l/Harpscript.htm)
it looks like 3rd position is a good choice to play in. For the key of
C diminished 3rd position (Bb harp):

Hole: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
Draw: C* F* A* C* Eb* G A* C* Eb* G
b : B* E Ab* B* -- Gb*
bb : Eb* G Ab* bb
bbb : Gb* Db E A* b
Blow: Bb D* F* Bb D* F* Bb D* F* Bb

The *'d notes are in the diminished scale. Try making up some riffs
that use only *'d notes and see if they work well.
