Subject: Re: Harp Quality

My experience for many years with Hohner is that they are uneven in many
keys. I've had delicious harmonicas from Hohner in every key, Marine
Bands, Golden Melodies, S20s, and pre-MS Cross Harps. The problem is
that there are fewer and fewer of those really sweet ones and many that
simply aren't tight. When they are good and tight, no leaking, you
don't have to work as hard to make them behave. If you've gotten a good
Cross Harp in C, that's good, but I honestly don't think it's because
some keys are better than others in Marine Band or S20. I think it's
because there are simply fewer good ones with their current production
practices (which I don't pretend to understand).

Nevertheless, when I first started working with Tombos (when they
were available in the US and cheaper than LOs), I prefered the feel of
middle range LOs, Bb, C, D, Eb, and Hohners in the low and high keys.
But I haven't gotten a Hohner I've been excited about in ages and my last
nostalgic forray cost me a fortune without a single harp being worth the
price (Marine Bands, the harp I grew up with--haven't tried a
Meisterklasse in years).
