Subject: Ricky and the CoolRays

Rocket sent me a demo that he has developed with his group,
Ricky and the CoolRays. Rocket writes the songs, sings and plays harp. It is
his project, the offspring of a long period of musical development that
started with him as a harp player, and evolved into singing, songwriting, and
bandleading. He is an astounding musician. The entire package is very tasty,
and, to my ears, very unusual within the rock/blues idiom. More specifically,
his harp playing is brilliant, with great tone, clean, supple moves, total
mastery of all the major techniques, plus a few that were new to me. He has
the most wonderful way of slowly, slyly bending the high notes up from their
bent positions. There's a humor in the way he does it. In fact, like many of
my favorite musicians, there's a sense of humor to all of Rocket's music. The
songs are witty. His voice, kind of a Satchmo growl that hits every note
perfectly and actually goes all over the scale, is, in its own way, humorous.
This is great, great stuff, colorful as hell, filled with personality, and
so good, it sounds effortless. Rick has described to me part of his process,
what he's comitted and risked to pursue his music. Any success he receives
will be richly deserved. He's an original. Jon
