Subject: Harp Attack #12

Well, since I was unable to attend the 1996 SPAH Convention in St Louis,
and all of your glowing reports tend to make me a little homesick, I felt
I could at least give a report of the happening here at Cozy's in
Sherman Oaks, CA, last Wednesday. It was the 12th Harp Attack, organized
and hosted by Chris LeRoi Hansen, better known as LeRoi Sorgo, and it was
probably the best one yet. Don't these things always get better with
each new happening?

Anyway, the all-star back-up band consisted of John Marx - guitar &
vocals (11 years w/ Captain & Tennille; and Blues Underground); "Gashouse
Dave" Shorey - lead guitar & vocals (Mike Bloomfield Band); Max Bangwell
- drums & vocals (Robert Lockwood Jr); Willie Brinlee - bass (original
William Clarke Band); and Dave F'Dor - keyboards.

This year's lineup included Jimmy Powers, David McKelvy, Larry David,
Stanley Behrens, Tetsuya Nakamura, Mike Curtis, Mark Anthony, LeRoi
Sorgo, Bobby Joe Holman, Michael Fell, Robert Root, and many others.
Each taking their turn, and when their time was up, the audience was
begging for more, without exception. Each one a professional, most
with many credits to their names, too numerous to mention here. There
were also many other "name" performers in the audience, one of whom was
Floyd Sneed, drummer for Three Dog Night, who sat in on drums for Bobby
Joe Holman's set.

It was loud, it was noisy, it was busy, it was jam-packed. But it was an
orderly and appreciative audience with no rowdiness. Just like a
mini-SPAH Convention - lots of ideas and information shared, overflow
players and jammers on the sidewalk along Ventura Blvd, and in the rear
parking area. The New World Harmonica Trio was privileged to be included
in the lineup, but we questioned whether we should "interrupt" a flowing
blues show with our non-blues fare. After the first of three planned
selections, we were put at ease with a reception we could not have
dreamed of. We were forced to play a 4th, after which we invited Dave
McKelvy to join us on chromatic for a 5th and finally a 6th number!
Seems the blues aficianados weren't prepared for our type of show either,
and most of them had never seen a chord or bass harmonica before. This
was new to them, and they weren't about to let us off easy. We had great
fun, and were invited back by LeRoi for the next Harp Attack. We'll be
there!
