Anyone out there heard Jerry McCain recently? I've been meaning to raise some noise about him on harp-l for a while, and was reminded today when I quite literally ran into him on an escalator at Atlanta airport. I was seeing my son off on the plane to England, Jerry and the three members of Microwave Dave & the Nukes who back him up were on the way back from headlining a big blues festival in Switzerland.
Jerry is an old black guy who plays the swampiest deep Southern harmonica you'll ever hear (live). The Nukes, who all live here in Huntscille, AL, are Microwave Dave Gallagher on guitar, Rick Godfrey on bass and Arty Dean on drums (a name familiar to any drummers who collect pre-1940 kits).
Dave is one of the finest blues guitar players I have ever worked with. He's also a walking blues encylopedia (sp?), and hosts a fine blues show on local radio, AND is a a very fine harp player in his own right.
The Nukes have had their own thing going for many years around the South East circuit, but in the last couple of years have been working more and more with Jerry. The four piece is a classic act, which is starting to get some major airtime in Europe, and growing rapidly in the US. Dave's funny rendition of Roadrunner has been adopted by the fans of one of Frances major league soccer teams ("Beep Beep!"), which puzzles the whole band somewhat.
Catch them in a small venue while you still can.
Jerry won't be at this one, but ... if you live within range of Huntsville, Dave will be at a benefit gig here on Sunday, 17th Sep (this month), along with Billy C Farlow (harp player and vocalist for Command Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen, one of my all time favourite bands (ever heard Hot Rod Lincoln?)) and my band (The Snake Doctors). Dave and Billy will do their thang together, then the Doctors will play for a while, then we'll get get Dave and Billy back up to jam with us.
It'll be a hoot!! Bring a cooler full of beer and a few bucks to the amphitheatre on Montesano mountain (well, hill, but they call it a mountain), from 3pm till dark (says the Park Ranger). Better bring an umrella as well!
