Before you worry about scales, first try a couple of songs, or simply
improvising, if you have a patient rhythm section or Aebersold CDs.

I'd recomend starting with Christo Redempto and Summertime to begin
to get the theird position feel. Once you're playing basic melodies,
it should be a short step to improvising in Dorian mode.
