Subject: Re: harp physics

The guy from Australia who published the paper on harp physics was Robert
Johnston (Robert Johnson was some other guy...:-)). It is very heavy going
for the non-physicist. There have also been a few other papers written about
free reeds generally (mostly to do with harmoniums, etc - or is the plural
"harmonia"?), the main part of the research being done about a century ago.
I'm still waiting for my local library to track down some of these articles
for me.

If it sounds good, then it doesn't really matter what's going on inside the
thing, but there are a few things about the harp that *don't* sound good -
the "squeaking" that sometimes accompanies overblows/draw and bending. I've
found a way to stop this, but I have to confess I'm not certain what it is
that I've stopped. (However, experiments are ongoing, so stay tuned for
results as and when I have them.)

Johno has been very helpful to me with my recent research. Steve Baker told
me he was a helpful (and knowledgeable) guy and I have to say, this proves
that it *does* take one to know one!
