Sounds as if your friend broke the reed while tuning it. I've done this
before and almost always on the higher holes 7-10. Yes they do break
along stress lines from the tuning but only after someone abuses them.
Find one that broke from being played and I'll believe it. The higher
reeds are easily bent while tuning and extra care needs to be taken. fjm
