Subject: copyright

Hi all,
when I see something on harp-l that I think would be of paticular intrest
to readers of harmonica world or captivates the spirit of harp-l in some
way I forward it to Harmonica Worlds editor Colin Mort. At this stage it is
just a comunication between two harmonica intrested parties. I leave it to
Colin to decide if it is sutable for publication in the clubs magiseen, I
also leave such things as geting permision and staying with-in the law in
Colins hands. Colin's address is 100571.1~ompuserve.com
Just as a point of intrest the usa never signed the Bern convention
and has very different copyright laws to the U.K. where I beleave there is
a copyright dispensation for publications under a certain size, for reasons
of education or critique. whilst it could be argued that such quoting as go
on in harmonicw world are a form of critique of the eletricly published
Harp-L and it also could be argued that for a harmonica writer to be
published in H.W. is just a form of free advertising, I am making none of
these arguments. I too make my meager living from things harmonica, I just
wanted to put the record stright as to the process by which things from
Harp-L turn up in Harmonica World. I do not feel that getting permision
from the authers of the posts which I forward is my responsibility, I am
not the person re-publishing them for the public, I would also like to
inform as many as I can of Harp-l as I think it is a splendid resource.
I do provide Harmonica World with copy of my own, both music and
word text, at no charge (they can't afford to pay any way) but I concider
that such copy serves me as being an advertisement for me and the services
that I offer and I also like to make such contribution as I can to the
harmonica comunity both nationally and internationally.
I have included Colin's E-mail address here and those that would
like to send him copy for publication or who would like to make complaint
of his usage of their matearil can do so directly. As colin is not on
harp-l complaints concerning Harmonica Worlds usage of copy posted to
harp-L will quite lightly miss him altogeather.
I am glad that he quotes his source and I agree that it would be
polite for him to ask before publishing but I wouldn't get in too much of a
strop about it, the circulation of H.W. is relitivley small and colin (like
myself) is very busy doing time consuming and often expencive things for
the U.K. harmonica comunity for we get no thanks or renumeration and it is
quite possible that between deadlines all the rest and trying to have a
life, some things do get missed.
Things harmonica: the U.K. harmonica Championships has been moved
to the Woodford workingmens club, highrise, woodford Northamptonshire and
is happening on the 28th of setember. it starts with a morning of workshops
and goes on to an afternoon of competition all finishing up about 7 in the
evening. be there if you can - David
