Subject: basic questions about chromatic

I have been playing the diatonic for some time now to blues music, and
have found it relatively easy to play and improvise to blues recordings:
just figure out the key of the song, pick up a harp in the corresponding
cross harp key, and there you go. However, when I try to play to modern
rock (dare we say, alternative) styles of music, I found a lot of the
notes horns and guitairs are playing are not available to me on my harp,
even when I am sure I am playing in the right key (cross harped).
Although I know very little about the chromatic, I have become interested
in it becuase I think it might solve this problem. Is it true that you
can get all notes on the chromatic without bending? How often does the
slide come into play and just what does the slide do? Do you need formal
instruction to learn how to play the chromatic effectively? What is a
good chromatic model to start with, and could you also recommend a book
or tape, etc?
Thank you for helping me out!!
