OK, I've freed up enough space on the server to start loading up any harmonica soundbytes y'all might have lying around. The space came from deleting some old mail files to the tune of 200Mb ... most of it harp-l bounce mail and error messages!!
I'm writing the README for the soundbyte directory right now. If it's there by the time you get there, have a read of it.
The location is:
ftp://ha~oo.garply.com/sounds
That'll work in Netscape, dunno about anything else. If you are using a more traditional ftp client, just go to foo.garply.com, log in as user harp, then "cd sounds".
You'll need a password, for which you'll have to mail me privately (hu~arply.com). OK, here's a clue - Mr Hohner's first name, with the first letter capitalized.
In the sounds directory you will find three sub-directories: diatonic, chromatic and other. Should be fairly self explanatory!
With each sound file, please include a .txt file of the same name with a description of the noise (who is it, what is it, what harp, what key, etc etc). If I get time tonight I'll put up and example or two with a .txt file - have a look at them to see what kind of info we're looking for here.
Once there are some sounds in there, I'll start categorizing them more meaningfully.
PLEASE PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE keep your samples as small as possible. Record in "telephone" quality (8k hertz, 8 bit, mono). Keep it to small snippets, not entire riffs or tunes. The experiments I've been doing grow to around 60 or 70Kb for a 5 or 6 second snippet, which is the kind of size / length I'm aiming for.
If you are putting up a sample from a copyrighted recording, make sure you observe the standard limit for length (whatever that is - any offers?). I don't wanna get popped for copyright infringement.
Remember that the point of this exercise is to have a library of soundbytes illustrating technique, not a library of cool tunes. We don't yet have the disk space for the latter.
Any problems, questions - I'll be here all night ... *groan* ...
