I think the valves are indeed part of it. I removed the windsavers from
the D and A draw reeds on my CX-12 and those holes play and bend like a
diatonic--both reeds participate.

I think cupping is another issue. You just can't get your hands around
a chromatic. And mostly they won't fit in your pocket.

And to Play the chromatic Harmonica Well you might need some icky music
theory.
