In addition to the review of "Deep in the Blues," there is also an interview with Junior Wells and Sugar Blue. I believe it is in the Downbeat Magazine, but I'll have to check to be certain. Anyhow, the interview is VERY interesting... Wells seems to be a real class act, while Blue is borderline racist. Growing up in Harlem, he has the gaul to insist his black skin yields a unique 'right' to play the blues, while whites have only marginal connection to the music. In my opinion, if one is to go as far to say black skin is the sole connection to blues, we can go a step further and say Southern slaves and cotton pickers were the only society with the right to play...
Perhaps I am taking Blues' comments to the extreme - read the article and judge for yourself. I re-read the interview several times, and can't escape the remarks. Junior Wells is an extremely enlightened person, hindered only by his class not to argue with Sugar Blue. What do you say, fellow Harp-L'ers??
