I'd suggest Phil Gazelle 1979 recording on the sugar hill label. Phil does a very tasteful job of extending the second position work on fiddle tunes begun by the likes of Charlie McCoy. A couple of cuts on the project pay a bit of homage to McCoy, in my mind, esp. Miss The MIssissippi. Phil's original tune, Susan's Cable Stitch, as well as his British Isles Medley are great tunes to woodshed while exploring the genre. Phil is accompanied by Ricky Skaggs & Jerry Douglas on this one and he cut the disc while playing in a band The West Texas Music Company, which was serving as Johnny Paycheck's back up band at the time. NIce cuts of Billy in The Low Ground, Off To California, Bedrock Breakdown (Flintsone's theme, a somewhat popular bluegrass novelty tune of the era...) and others. Don't know if it is still offered in their catalog. wjj
