Subject: Bluegrass Harmonica

Fellow Harpers:
In response to the following posts, I'll submit some information which
I've sent to several of you off-line.

It seems there are few bluegrass harmonica players working these days. I
know of others besides Mike Stevens. P.T. Gazell put out an LP, "Pace
Yourself" on Sugar Hill in 1978, when he was with Johnny Paycheck. He is a
great player, and the LP has bluegrass selections like Roanoke, and slower
country such as "Miss the Mississippi and You." Great album if you can find
it. Ricky Scaggs and Jerry Douglas are among the supporting cast. When I
was only 18 I met P.T. at a bluegrass festival jam session and was literally
blown away...I hid my harps!
Charlie McCoy recorded with Flatt and Scruggs during their Columbia
years in the 1960s, as some of you probably know. "The Versatile Flatt and
Scruggs" LP is a fine example. I learned a lot about bluegrass playing and
single note soloing from McCoy, which I was able to use in country music as
well. One of the younger generation of Georgia's The Lewis Family (Travis
Lewis) plays a mean bluegrass harp. I've heard him on gospel radio shows. He
married Sheri Easter (I think) and they have recorded together but I don't
remember the name of their act. Your bluegrass friends may be able to help
you there. George Thacker has a couple of bluegrass-related harmonica albums
available.
As I play harmonica bluegrass style, and have several albums available
which may interest some readers of this list, I have listed some information
below. The backup musicians some of the finest bluegrass players in
Wisconsin and Minnesota. The cassettes are $10, the CDs $15. I'll cover
postage and handling. If you send a check, the order should take less than
two weeks.
