Subject: ADMINISTRIVIA - majordomo upgrade

As many of you have noticed, delivery of list mail has slowed down
somewhat over the last month. This is due to backbone congestioon
problems, as Internet usage overtakes available bandwidth at many of the
major providers. This renders as much as 30% of the list "unreachable"
for many hours at a time, and slows down delivery to people who are
reachable.

The nice folk on majordomo-workers have now more or less finished version
1.94, with some add ons to address this very problem. The author of one
of these add ons reckons that delivery time to all of the reachable
addresses on harp-l would be approx. 5 minutes, as opposed to the current
8+ hours.

Needless to say, I want to upgrade to 1.94. However, it's a big upgrade,
and I can guarantee at least some list disruption. You'll see some test
messages letting you know when the upgrade is actually happening. Please
give me at least 24 hours from that point before mailing me about
problems!

Hopefully the hypermail archives will continue to be updated instantly, so
if you don't receive mail for a while, go and check them
(www.garply.com/archives/harp-l). There will at least be a followup to
this message giving a status report.
