Subject: Gig - where does it come from

[Hardly any related harp content]

Sitting around the pub last night talking about upcoming
gigs me and the band are doing, when somebody asked -
"Where does the word 'gig' come from ?"

SOmeone thought it might be from the days when old cars were
called gigs and they were then used to ferry people home
after a show.I dunno.

Any takers .........??
