Wim seems to have worked on this quite a bit and probably his suggestions
are good. He's handholding the mic when he does the acoustic harp. I
find the sound I want pretty much straight from whatever vocal mic I'm
using. However it's eq'ed for my voice and is a bit bright with these Lee
Oskars I'm resigned to play with, which are themselves bright and brassy
sounding. I'm currently using a Shure BG5, but I do not hold the mic in
my hand. I leave it on the mic stand I suspect because to me acoustic
harp sounds like Sonny Terry, who did not hold the mic in his hands. I
suggest you try it, leaving the mic on a mic stand and backing off. I
think the SM57's pick up pattern isn't the best for this unless you get
right up on it, and so, yes, I would recommend the SM58 because you can
get a bit back from it. Condenser mics tend to be more sensitive, so you
can back away and not lose the lower end the way you do with 57s and
58s. But I say, my experience isn't as comprehensive as Wim's.
