Subject: Re: Proving the existence of fish

I recall a stereo salesperson once telling me that A/B tests weren't
particularly valid as a way of telling which speaker you'd prefer due to
the fact that people have very short aural memories. He said a skilled
salesperson would manipulate the test to get you to buy whatever had the
better margin. The only valid test he said was to actually take the
speakers home and listen to them for a period of time forming an
impression then do the same thing with the other pair under
consideration. At the time I wasn't looking for any speakers and he
wasn'y looking to sell me anything either. I do think that an A/B test
with plastic and wooden bodies harmonicas might tell us that people have
poor aural memories but not much more. I will confess that the acoustics
of the human ear and the complexities of the brains processing of audio
signals are outside of my area of expertise but I think the same can be
said for virtually everyone else engaged in this particular debate.
Oftentimes the design of a test can preclude a valid result. fjm
