Subject: Re: Tone deaf

My understanding is that "tone deafness" is a real but very rare affliction
in which an individual cannot hear a pitch correctly; therefore he can't
reproduce it. While I don't have as much experience as the teachers on the
list, I have worked with a number of "non-singing" actors who *swore* they
were tone deaf, and none of them was.

If you can correctly reproduce a pitch you hear (played on a piano, for
instance), you are not tone deaf. Being able to carry a simple tune, which
entails producing intervals without hearing the reference pitch first, is
another matter entirely. The ability to match intervals is a function of
memory, not hearing or sound production.

I've seen a lot of people *convince* themselves they were tone deaf since
they were not comfortable with their ability (or inability) to "carry a tune."

Ironically, the only person I ever met who was actually *diagnosed* with
tone deafness is a phenomenal bassist.
