I guess I was lucky. When I started playing guitar and singing HORRIBLY at
about age 14, I complained bitterly to my mother how I thought I was tone
deaf. She told me that singing was something you have to learn to do and
suggested I keep at it.

(Then she shut my door.)

It wasn't until years later that I actually studied voice fairly
extensively. I then learned to appreciate what a subtle art it is to sing. I
doubt very much that I'd have had the ability even to begin to study if
anyone had actually agreed with me when I said I was tone deaf.
