Subject: Bamboo Saxophone

To all those who expressed interest in my bamboo saxophone:

The maker is Zacciah Blackburn, who can be reached at

Sunreed Instruments
2 Fairview Street
Springfield, Vermont
05156
(802) 885-6937

I was very interested to learn that there is a maker of
these instruments in Hawaii. It appears that Sunreed Instruments
takes credit for developing the bamboo sax. I quote from their
brochure: "A unique instrument created by Sunreed Instruments.
A traditional saxophone mouthpiece, fused onto a piece of bamboo,
gives a strikingly sax-like sound enjoyed by novice and experienced
alike. Limited range, with one full octave, fully chromatic, with
an upper range available at an octave and a half [by overblowing]."

Current models, keys, and prices are as follows:

Sopranino C $42.00
Soprano Bb,A,G $48.00
Alto F,E,Eb,D $52.00
Tenor C,Bb,A $64.00

I will say again, that tonal quality varied between instruments,
which one would expect when natural materials are used.
