Subject: Re: breathing

I believe I read somewhere that you are supposed to refrain from breathing
out your nose when playing.

I don't agree with that statement. I mean, you don't want to
be breathing in and out of your nose too much when playing, but to close off
your nose completely would mean you can only get air through your mouth. I
would thnk you want your nose to breathe about the same way it does when
talking. No sniffing, but don't close it off either. If you have to stop from
sniffing, it may FEEL as though you have to close your nose off, but this
would just be a reduction. I feel that openess of nasal passages and sinus
passages is important to resonance, though I couldn't prove the statement. I
think your breathing problems have more to do with the info I sent to David
in the earlier post on breathing. Too much air. Too much force.. Breathing
too deeply (like from the lungs) on every blow and draw. I liken correct
breathing to pushing a milkshake back in forth in a straw. It's shallow
mouth breathing supported by a body
half filled with air. Make harpin' as little work as possible
to get the effect you want. Play smart, not big. I'll be interested to hear
other opinions and tips. Jon
