A non-harmonica diversion.

A couple of years ago my guitar player was helping a local roadhouse venue
owner clear out his stack of promotional material sent by bands and
agents. He came across a promo package for Pinetop Perkins. He asked the
owner how the show went ... turns out the owner didn't even call Pinetop's
agent, as he couldn't imagine why anyone would pay good money to see "some
old black dude play piano by hisself".

[Well, being a Southern bar owner, he didn't say "old black dude".]

Charlie took huge pleasure in telling him just who the heck Pinetop
Perkins is, and just how massive a show it would have been for him. One
of the "founders" of boogie woogie piano, and a man who has been
performing for a living since 1926!!

Amazingly, they only wanted $750 for a 75 minute show, which even in the
mid 80's (when the promo package was delivered) would have been a damn
good price for Pinetop.

PS. To Tom Barker III - if I say "Lance", you'll know who I mean!

PPS. This is the same bar owner who after a succesful Bo Diddley show
(for which my band opened, still one of my best performing memories, with
the man himself sitting in on percussion with us!) asked us if there were
any other old blues acts he could hire. We told him Muddy Waters, so he
spent about a week trying to get hold of an agent who would book him.
This was in '93, a decade after Muddy passed on!
