Subject: Throat Vibrato

Vittorio,

As a fellow sufferer let me give you somewhat of a "cure",or at
least shed some light on that damned vibrato. I am enrolled in a "blues
class" where this is one technique that is much discussed. My teacher, Joe
Filisko says to first and foremost relax your throat. You must relax in order
to let your throat create the sort of warbling effect that it is treying to
achieve for you. Try these few things. One is the "train" rhythm of lightly
placing the lips on the harp and breathing in twice and then out twice. Do
this in a very relaxed manner holding the harp in one hand to further
facilitate relaxation. Also kind of throw your jaw out and widen your mouth
cavity by saying ooh. This will create a resonating chamber for the vibrato.
As I say try to push yourself on the train rhythm going as fast
as you can. Also stand in front of a mirror(maybe you already do:-) and make
sure you're relaxing
It is a technique that I've been told does not come easy so
DON'T GET TOO FRUSTRATED. Like I say I have been working on it for a year
without too much sucess and I have picked up most other things pretty
quickly.
