I just checked and I still do something like this. It is unconcious to me
and just happens all by itself. I have seen people ask recently about how
to play without getting out of breath. Nose technique is the answer. Using
the nose as a valve, I play with it closed off unless I am breathing while
playing. Of course i am always breathing, so that doesn't really help, does
it?

I do close my nose valve when bending and if it is a snap bend I think a
"silent snort" (as jg put it) describes what I do sometimes.

This is true. Jon has more of a sweet tone. I have more of a power tone.
