I'm not too excited about getting into this one, but I noticed something
I found interesting yesterday. I have a number of dictionaries, mostly
Webster's, but one I truly enjoy is The Oxford Universal Dictionary on
Historical Principals, from the Oxford University Press in London, out of
Great Britain, of course. It's a favorite for it's intriguing offerings
of etymologies, a longtime fascination of mine, despite it's being now a
bit old and dated, having been first printed in 1933, and this issue was
printed in 1955.

What I found was that this excellent, information-packed resource had
absolutely no reference whatsoever to the word "fuehrer", nor even to
"Fuhrer", the self-adopted title of Hitler, or anything even close. From
fucivorous to fugacious, nothing...just fudge then fuel. Perhaps it's
true that the English really don't like that word one bit!

Anyone out there with a more recent edition of Oxford's find it in theirs?
I'd be curious to know.

I did find that the word derives from the German word "fuhren" meaning
"to lead."

[Ok...for anyone wondering..."fucivorous" refers to having a diet of
seaweed, and "fugacious" means evanescent, tending to fade away or fall
away [e.g., a snake's skin.]

I, OTOH, am more inclined to being "fudgivorous", a derivation of the
above mentioned "fudge".
